Banksy Sells Original Artwork for $60 in Central Park
I find it very interesting that a renowned artist, an artist that can make over 1 million dollars on one piece would take to the streets of New York. Then what also shocks me is in a city that values art in the many museums they have, why no one was able to recognize that these pieces of art were famous, and of value… perhaps they thought they were knock-offs if they did recognize them.
Thirdly, I find it interesting because I think Banksy had a very humbling experience. I think he would have went home that day thankful for his success and how not all great artists get recognized. It makes me smile that he had the courage to demand a public opinion as opposed to the every day critics of the art world. Does this mean that his art is to be thought less of… no, however it makes us think of what artists we are ignoring that have god given talent, and that sometimes it is worth stopping and appreciating those that express themselves in beautiful ways. In the end it is always the opinion of the viewer, and the public does not get to decide whom gets to be famous and recognized as “fine art”.
Personally, I wish I could have had the chance to buy a $60 Banksy :).
Let me know what you think? Do you think Banksy deserves artistic recognition? How do we decide ourselves what is “fine art”? How do you choose favourite art pieces… do you just listen to art critics and professionals?
